The first week of 2022, and we've begun with ICDS teacher's training across South India. As the pandemic keeps raging on, and schools look at staying shut for yet another month, The Ashoka Tree continues to work, beginning the year with training sessions across various platforms. This is how we roll! It's that time of the year again, when we sit down and give thanks for all that we have been able to achieve this year and all that we plan to do the next. Tentative plans to travel on and work harder, smile bigger and laugh louder - there's so much to be done in the year to come!
The Ashoka Tree's last physical volunteer meet for 2021 now "officially" gets marked as #done. Being hungry is not something that can be taken for granted - more so during a time when jobs are lost every other day, and getting adequate nutrition in for younger children in every family becomes a luxury.
Here's where we step in. The Ashoka Tree is working through Anganwadis, providing nutrition packages for younger children continuously, so we can monitor their growth over the next couple of months, so they stay stronger longer. “The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team." #PhilJackson . The Ashoka Tree is honoured to have Lakshmipathi Selvaraj on our team - #silambam expert, who works with our children, keeping them off the streets with martial arts training. This form of martial arts, originating in Tamil Nadu, is famous not just for one’s dexterity and hand-eye coordination, but the mental strength and concentration involved with each move. It’s about learning something new every day, learning from each other every day, dreaming bigger dreams together - staying #StrongerTogether #Tokyo2020 #TeamIndia #teamwork #HowYouLikeThat ? Music is really that one international language that brings us all together. #BlackPink in rural Kerala - on our July ‘21 Dance-Off with preschool children. Whether you’re Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, Lisa or our own little Mariya - South Korea ain’t so far away after all! #OneWorld #OneLife #One #IncredibleIndia #Volunteering #NewNormal #DWTS #theashokatree #NGO #IndiavsCorona It’s a year and a half since play schools were open here in India. But if that doesn’t stop us from a little dress-up competition, what will? Here’s our own Layla - perhaps we’ll have Majnun on our next competition. Join us as we spread more smiles. The Ashoka Tree conducts virtual competitions and educational workshops with underprivileged children between the ages of 2-6 years. #volunteer #earlychildhoodeducation #India #socialworkers #underprivileged #unseenIndia There’s a sense of disappointment over everything else that’s happening in India today - it’s 2021 and yet, ‘dowry’ is still a thing.
Perhaps it’s easier to say “wait till she gets married off” about one’s daughter than to admit - we’re still selling our girls - whether it’s jewellery, a car or money - our girls are not for sale! And this is something every parent/daughter/son needs to remember. STOP. Think. Is this what you’ve brought her up for? Is she really worth just this much? Instead of teaching her to collect jewellery for when she gets married, teach her to stand on her own two feet. Give her confidence in who she is on her own - without a spouse by her side - that her job is just as important as that of whom she marries. If you’re a parent, this one’s on you. She’s still your daughter even after she’s married. If you’re a daughter, are you really worth the price tag put on you? Don’t you have more of yourself to give the universe? If you’re a boy - every rupee she brings, is still on you. Which planet were you born on that says it’s okay to buy a bride with her gold and car? THINK. It’s 2021. #DowryDeath #Dowry #IndianBrides #indianwedding #mybigfatindianwedding There's not a home around privileged India that does not have at least one unused phone lying around.
What are you doing with yours? If you have an unused laptop/tablet/smart phone in working condition, donate NOW -there's always a child waiting for one so she/he can continue her education online. Do it now. Donate. |
